Silver Linings Playbook

silver_linings_playbook-1680x1050– I had ONE incident!

– But one incident can change a lifetime.

Last night I wanted to watch something funny and hopeful and sweet. So I thought what better than a film with the title Silver Linings Playbook! And it really is a brilliant film!

After 8 months of hospitalization into a mental hospital for assault,  Pat’s mother takes him out to live in his parents’ house, but Pat still has issues. Tiffany comes into his life in a very sudden way and tries to change it, dealing with her own loss at the same time.

As I started watching the film I felt sad, uncomfortable and unsettled. I could see the main character was struggling. While the film moved on I started to feel that something bad might happen. I hoped that everything would turn out for the best. And that’s just it. Every cloud has a silver lining! This film makes you hope. Though it is bittersweet at times, (the father is also problematic and Pat’s friends do not really know how to help) you come to love the characters and feel for them. Their dancing is lovely and hilarious! The music is wonderful! This film is great!

the-place-beyond-the-pines-free-preview-screenings-131046-a-1364298520-470-75The Place Beyond the Pines is one of the films that I had in my to-watch list for months, but for some reason I always postponed watching it. Now I have seen it I wish I had postponed it some more.

It is a film about a motorcycle stunt rider who starts robbing banks to support his child and the police officer that confronts him.He also has to confront the whole corrupted police department.

It is a film that has some action and violence and even in scenes which are not so violent we understand there is pressure on the characters. Other than that it is neither good nor bad. I don’t know if this is a man’s film but it is definitely not a girl’s; even with Mr Gosling and Mr Cooper in it. It can be very useful if you had a difficult day. Watch it and after 5-10 minutes you will fall asleep!

Les Miserables

les miserablesUnfortunately I don’t have  the words to express how magnificent this film is. It is officially one of my favourite films.

Published in 1862 by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables remains until today one of the most powerful stories ever written. It is set in France in the beginning of the 19th century and tells the story of Jean Valjean who was convicted because he stole a loaf of bread. He was released from prison but broke his parole and assume a new identity. Javert is the famous inspector determined to catch him.

Valjean from a desperate thief and hated convict becomes the man who can give hope, save lives and be loved. He movies_les_mis_promo_pics_2asks himself Who am I? when he clearly has found himself. He asks the same question again when he was faced with the greatest dilemma of his life. Should he reveal his true identity or let someone else take the blame? What makes the book and the film so powerful is that he chooses the hard path of telling the truth. He is a strong man and we admire him for it.

It is such a passionate film and the songs are so moving. They show us despair, hate, malice, forgiveness, friendship, loss, pain. I couldn’t help but cry when Fantine was singing or at Eponine’s death. I loved Thenardier and his wife as Master of the house. I completely adored little Gavroche and his heroism. It is such an amazing film that I am only sorry I am not part of it. Films so great make me want to do great things; though being just a sick beggar at the beggar’s chorus would be enough.gavroche

Leap Year

amy-adams-in-leap-year_1600x1050_76318Having had a dull day I wanted to watch something refreshing and funny. Well Leap Year can put a smile on your face!

A young American starts her journey to Dublin to surprise her long time boyfriend by proposing on the 29th of February. According to a local tradition that is the only date when women can propose to their boyfriends. But everything she does screams bad luck!

In the beginning, as I watched the film I got to  thinking that women can be really stupid. Luckily the film is set in beautiful Ireland and as the protagonists walk their way to Dublin (how does she walk in those heels?) we get to see a lot of this wonderful country. As the film continues you get used to the characters and even like them; your eyes fill with the amazing landscape so by the end of it you have a smile on your face that stays with you long after the film is finished.

And for that reason I say get some crisps, a pint of Guinness and get in the Irish spirit!

Miss Pettigrew lives for a day

-Guinevere, haven’t you ever been torn between more than one person at the same time?

-No, I can’t say I’ve had that particular problem.

I don’t know what took me so long to watch Miss Pettigrew lives for a day. My best friend insisted on me watching it and she was absolutely right. For this is a brilliant movie. It is poetry on film (if I may be so bold)!

Miss Guinevere Pettigrew the daughter of a clergyman who is kicked out of many jobs, as it seems, for being londontaxisso strict goes to work for Delysia Lafosse, a-soon-to-be Hollywood star that has responded to the interest of not one, nor two but three young men! So Miss Pettigrew finds herself set in this unlikely background. The music is fabulous and the pre-war London exudes glamour. The two women are so different and yet they blend so well together like mother and daughter, aunt and niece or maybe even sisters. Both actresses are brilliant in their craft and the film is one of the best that the industry can offer. The sense of adventure in this film when something happens out of nothing and the comic elements that make it so funny leave you with a big smile on your face long after the end.

So just watch it! After a particularly long day get your girlfriends together, make your cocktails and enjoy. I guarantee you will have a great time!!

The Lucky One

“…something happens when you least expect it, sets you on a course that you never planned, into a future you never imagined.”

Not having seen my better half for almost six months I wanted to watch a film to remind me of love. Having watched and loved The Notebook, Message in a Bottle and One Day I thought that a right choice would be to watch The Lucky One; another Nicholas Sparks novel adapted into a film. A marine got back from Iraq believing that he survived the war because of a picture of a girl he found in the ruins. So he was determined to go find her, his guardian angel.

Unfortunately the film was a bit disappointing. It describes the least tragic pair of lovers in any of Sparks’ novels. Beth, the leading lady, was a total bitch in the beginning for no apparent reason and Logan, the marine, turned out to be too perfect! But how can a man be perfect when he has longer eyelashes than his girl?

Nevertheless. the film is set in a beautiful scenery, the supporting characters of the grandmother, Beth’s son and her ex husband are more realistic and they do support the film. The photography is also excellent and the music is calming. You should watch it only if there is really nothing better to do.

Dracula 2000

dracula2000When I choose to watch a film I fairly know what to expect. Now I don’t know what compelled me (Gerard Butler I guess) to watch Dracula 2000, and though it seems quite promising in the beginning by the end of the film I realised why I hadn’t watched it when it was released in 2000. Because for people who have watched and favoured Bram Stoker’s Dracula they should  never  watch Dracula 2000.

After 25 min in the film I was glad to see that all the B movie characters got killed. Unfortunately I didn’t think that after encountering the vampire they would be resurrected! As the movie continued my suffering grew…????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The truth is I am too old to watch such a film. It is a perfect film if it is Halloween or if you are a teenager and want to get a little scared. If you are over 30 don’t watch it for any reason (not even for Mr Butler who is quite decent) as you are going to experience boredom and suffering.
