Now you see me‘My job? To take that most precious of gifts you give me, your attention, and use it against you!’

On a boring Sunday evening I wanted to watch something that would be entertaining and I hit the spot with Now you see me.

Four illusionists get together under a strange summoning and pull together amazing stunts and magic tricks on stage, like robbing a bank in France! As expected they attract the attention of the FBI and the Now you see me the showInterpol. We follow the plot as the police is fooled and tricked as well by the illusionists and they can’t prove a thing. I was hooked from the start as the trick with the cards is amazing. (I also chose the card that appeared on the building! How did this happen?)

The story blends together, the characters are a great team, the actors are all first rate artists and though I thought that I could find out the mystery character … well, I didn’t. It is exciting, it is entertaining, it will definitely make for an interesting evening and that is why it has been announced that Now you see me 2 is on the making! Now you see me cops

How to train your dragon

How_to_Train_Your_Dragon_PosterThis is Berk…other places have ponies and parrots… we have dragons!

Being in a festive mood since it is the middle of the Christmas holidays I wanted to watch something to make me feel like a child again. So what better than an animation film.

Though I am sure that watching How to train your dragon on a 3D screen would have been impressive it was surely fun to watch it on a small screen anyway. Showing us Hiccup, a How to Train Your Dragon movie imagecharacter that is different than the rest of the village, a Viking who refuses to kill dragons, he is a misfit who in the end succeeds to surprise and surpass everybody and of course be accepted. It shows that the next generation though quite close to the traditions, is the one that will bring change and revolution and the way to the future. Choosing an ancient tribe like the Vikings who suffer from ‘stubborness issues’ to show that they can also accept a good thing when they see one, the conclusion of the story is that fairly anyone can keep an open mind.

It was real fun and instructive at the same time and a great favourite of the kids. So much so that How to train your dragon 2 is coming out in 2014!

The Hangover

The Hangover part 1‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas’

The Hangover parts 1,2 and 3 are three movies with the same male company doing las vegasbachelorparties before their friends’ weddings. The first part is set in Las Vegas where they wake up without any memory of what happened the previous night and one friend missing. The second part is set in Bangkok where they wake up without any memory of what happened the previous night and one friend missing! bangkok13a The third part is set in Las Vegas basically where they go not for a bachelor party but with full knowledge and memory of what is happening and one friend being kept as a prisoner.

Part I is really funny, exciting and gives you energy by the end of it. You want to go out and do something. Part II is also funny and it has pictures of the-hangover-part-2-movie-poster-01beautiful and exotic scenery. You want to go travelling. Part III is not really funny. There is no reason really for calling the third part The Hangover as they don’t get hangover at all, though there is a wedding in the end. It was more an excuse to make another film following a successful The Hangover Part 3 Movierecipe; but it is an interesting adventure it keeps the pace and I was curious to see ‘the wolfpack’ once more. It was as if I met old friends again. The characters are detailed and I got to like them (except the little disgusting Chinese man).

I don’t know if these are women’s movies but since when watching four guys having fun is not for women?

The Hobbit

The Hobbit the book

The Hobbit or There and back again was published in 1937 and it has been a huge succes in children’s books since. It has also been a massive endeavour to be brought to the big screen, but the films are equally impressive.

the-hobbitAn Unexpected Journey  is the first part of a trilogy by the maker of The Lord of the Rings films, Peter Jackson, and it delivers the same quality, detail and mode of story telling as in the The Lord of the Rings series. I watched An Unexpected Journey on dvd and realised how much I missed from the film. Certain scenes are so magnificent that are worth watching on the cinema screen.

So last night I went to watch part 2, The Desolation of Smaug. the-hobbit-the-desolation-of-smaug-poster-22Equally impressive the story continues on the same pattern; adventurous, frightening and funny at times. It is definitely worth watching on a big screen. So at this festive time of year it is one of the best choices for a night at the cinema!

And of course we just have to wait next year for the last and final part!

Jane Eyre

janeeyre1‘I wish a woman could have action in her life, like a man. It agitates me to pain that the skyline over there is ever our limit…’

Having more than a decade that I read Jane Eyre I didn’t remember many details. I remember mainly the darkness and the solitude in Jane’s life. I forget that this is one of the most passionate love stories ever written.

Written by Charlotte Bronte and published in 1847 this novel was a success as it was ahead of its time. Jane Eyre, an orphan, growing up in an unloving house was sent to Lowood School where she would grow up in a very cold and strict environment. When she turned 18 she found a position at Thornfield Hall as the governess of young Adele. There is where she meets Mr Rochester the master of the house. This version of the film is so magnificent it is like a different reading of the book.jane-eyre-2011-02

The chemistry between Jane and Mr. Rochester is such that their every scene is breathtaking. Jane is so young and so passionate. Despite her difficult childhood she is a young woman that wants to live. And from the cold and harsh life that she has had, she finally comes to Thornfield where a great fire welcomes her. Rochester visits Thornfield unexpected and enters Jane’s life equally unexpected. In Thornfield Jane is free and happy and she falls in love for the first time and reminds us how passionate and difficult and exhausting first love is as she also feels betrayed for the first time.  The music blends and enhances the scenes so perfectly. It is so magnificent, so atmospheric and passionate; it fits the emotions like magic. The costumes are so great as they depict the fashion of the time and the actors are inspiring.

Sunshine Cleaning

sunshine_cleaning_xlg‘What was I before I was born?… What happens when we die?’

These are the questions that the film explores. And in between life takes over…sunshine_cleaning22

Rose is an everyday girl with no special talents trying to cope with everyday problems and life in general. She is so common as if she were our next door neighbour. Nevertheless her life is interesting as she is optimistic, she is a fighter and it shows her will to fight for the best. She is a cleaning maid and decides to run her own business along with her sister. Of course we can’t have everything as is so often the norm in life and that is what the film shows. It doesn’t feel as if watching a documentary but it shows real life as it is. Fun and moving at the same time.

The Hunger Games

220px-HungerGamesPosterBecause of the 2nd part of the The Hunger Games trilogy just coming out I was intrigued and decided to watch the first part to see what it is about.

President or God?

Just like in the myth of the Minotaur, one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts are chosen in random and are taken to the labyrinth, er… I mean the capital, where they have to be sacrificed. These are the Hunger Games and they are a reality tv show that takes part once a year. The sacrifice is that the participants have to be thrown in a wild forest where they have to survive and kill each other until there is only one winner left. All this is happening while the rest of the world is watching through a television set. The people from the production of the reality show, just like the Olympian gods, are watching from above and can change the rules of the games; like deus ex machina they help the players if they like them (or if it makes a good TV show) or sent Cerberus to make them suffer if they don’t. In the end President Snow reminds us of an angry Zeus; angry because the heroes tricked him and I guess will get ready to take his revenge!

Though it is set in a futuristic background and we must assume that we are in a world very far from the one we live in, I found myself paralleling these cruel games to our own society. The fear and distress that the participants of the games feel, the hunger and despair and anger that the people of the districts feel, the indifference and apathy that the people from the capital show, as well as the heroism and humanity of our Katniss and the hope she brings, they are everyday feelings springing from our world. Another reason why the Hunger Games are so successful and why I can’t wait to watch the second part!
