300-rise-of-an-empire-poster“We can only judge our future from what we have suffered in the past.” Themistokles

When 300: Rise of an empire was first released I was wondering who could surpass Leonidas and his 300. I was right, no body did, because Themistokles in this new film is his equal.

It is the story of the famous Athenian general Themistokles, famous for his clever tactics in the battle of Marathon fighting the Persian king Darius, but here we see him fight Darius’ son Xerxes. The story takes place parallel to Leonidas’ as he sets to stop the Persians in the Thermopylae. It is at the time when Greece was still divided into city-states, Sparta was empire4constantly against Athens, but Themistokles managed to unite the Greeks and fight against Xerxes and his notorious commander Artemisia.

The film depicts once more the freedom that was Greece against the threat of tyranny by an oppressive leader. What the strength and will of the few but free people can do against the many and mighty enslaved. I loved the design, and the clothes and the photography and the music that blended everything in it. I loved the way time stands still in some scenes but moves faster in others showing the ferocity and cruelty of the acts.

Watching it immediately after the Greek elections with the surprising and historical results of a left party being into government the film feels somehow up to date.

I only have one very basic wish left. That all Greek men would look like that!

hr_The_Grand_Budapest_Hotel_3On a quiet Saturday evening I watched The Grand Budapest Hotel and I have to say it is not what I expected.

It is the story of Gustave H the concierge of the Grand Budapest Hotel, a very luxurious and item4.rendition.slideshowVertical.grand-budapest-hotel-set-05-lobby-german-jugendstil-decorfamous hotel that was visited by the rich and mighty of this world . We see the rise and fall of the hotel through the history of the 20th century. It is narrated by the Lobby Boy, Zero Mustafa, that was trained by Gustave H, was very close to him and after various adventures came to be the final owner of the Grand Hotel.

It is a very creative and colourful film with an army of talented actors parading through it. Each scene and picture is a story by itself. It is fresh and new and unlike anything I have seen so far. It seems like a parody I-know-not-what-of but it makes a statement and makes you think at the same time.

It is great entertainment; interesting, inspiring and fun to watch!

The Guilt Trip

The-Guilt-TripLast night I wanted to watch a comedy and there was this film on TV called The Guilt Trip that I finally watched. But it wasn’t as funny as I expected.

It is about Andrew a scientist who just created a new detergent and is THE GUILT TRIPtrying to sell it all around the US and his mother Joyce accompanying him in this road trip.

A lot of things are happening that depict the expected relationship between a widowed mother and her single thirty something son, the predictable complaints the mother has, the foreseeable complaints the son has and the unsurprising way they solved everything and finally bonded. It is a sweet film, but it doesn’t have anything much to tell and it isn’t funny.

The-Secret-Life-of-Walter-Mitty-Movie-Poster-2013-version-e1388568863766I finally watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and I think that it was  amazing.

There is Walter Mitty, a man who has been working for 16 years for LIFE, a magazine secretlife3with the motto to live your life to the fullest. But Walter spends his working days in the underground offices of the company building, finds the photographs that should be processed and published, and imagines what he would do, and what he would say and how he would live if he were not Walter really. He hardly has the courage to ask a girl out, or respond back to insults; which is unfortunate because Walter is interesting. When one of the photos that Sean, the adventurous photographer has send, goes amiss Walter has to act; he decides to go to the end of the world and find Sean in an effort to find this picture.

I couldn’t help but feel that I was partly watching at myself on that film. How many times have I imagined to be a superhuman, act differently and how many times have I wished I could go to amazing and exotic places where unfortunately I don’t think that I ever will. Walter shows us all what we can do if we set our minds to and how we can overcome trivial difficulties, as every person is interesting. There is no need for diffidence and fear.

It is a beautiful film.

Her

her-movie-posterOne of my closest friends insisted on me watching Her, and she had a reason. Because finally a film like that appears and you feel that something totally new was born from people who actually have something fresh to say. Since new ideas have become really rare, Her has felt like a rain of new ideas giving me so much food for thought and feeling.

There is Theodore, a lonely letter-writer who starts a relationship with an operating system, Samantha. Throughout the film we get information about his life and his relationships either friendly, romantic or professional, how his new relationship with Samantha started and evolved and how this new experience affected and 3023517-inline-i-3-what-we-can-learn-about-the-future-of-ai-mobile-design-love-and-pants-from-spike-jonzes-herchanged him.

It is a film that explores everything there is about every kind of relationship. A lovely long term relationship of a couple that actually grew up together, the ugly endings, the few uncomfortable dates, meaningless sex, loneliness, excitement over a new love, how it evolves and becomes old and boring leading you to another conlusion and a new result, which will open another door and new expectations. It is the circle of life for me. Endless, similar, yet so immensely different, new, fresh, weird. At the same time I loved the music, the colours, and the new technological design and possibilities in this film.

Is it optimistic for the future or pessimistic? Each one of us has to decide for themselves! My friend loved it and so did I; just listen to her and and watch it!

Noah

Noah2014PosterI had wanted to watch Noah as soon as I first saw the trailer. A well known story with great actors, a fantastic director, what could go wrong? But I am so glad I didn’t go to the cinema to watch it.

As the film is about the biblical story of Noah and his ark, I shouldn’t bore you with a summary.Noah-Snakes-To-Ark

When I read of the story of Noah I never thought how it would be from a reality point of view. How it would be to see the animals get into the Ark, interacting with other people that probably were hostile towards him and then listen to them drowning or listening to rain falling over your head for days in a row. Probably because I never thought of him as a real person, more like a character from a book or a cartoon; like Batman or Donald Duck. Yet the reality part was what was interesting for me to watch in the film.

So the scenes with the giants and the forest and Methuselah, unfortunately they all seemed a bit ridiculous to me and they left a negative feeling over the whole film. I am not saying you shouldn’t watch it, but I am not saying that you should either.

Frozen-movie-posterI must be one of the few that hadn’t watched the famous musical Frozen, so it was the first film of 2015 that I decided to watch, and it was lovely.

Elsa and Anna are two sisters that used to be very close while they were little. But Elsa has magical powers that Anna doesn’t, so Elsa has to protect Anna and she does what she thinks is best after her parents’ request, by shutting herself off from her beloved sister. Of course when secrets are revealed adventures begin.Frozen_C

The love between siblings is something incomparable. The protection that the older siblings feel for the younger and the admiration that the younger siblings feel for the older as well as the special bond that only they share is something unique. At the same time they both want and will live their own lives, like Elsa that wants to finally feel free and test her powers, and Anna who wants to make her own family. Still, no matter how many years pass no one else, be it a good friend, partner or parent, can realise what they share or be part of this bond.

The music is beautiful and Disney’s films are getting better and better. So get your closest people closer and get down to watch it again and again!

Endless Love

EDL_31_5_Promo_4C_2F.inddThe last film of 2014 that I watched was Endless Love and I must admit it wasn’t as bad as I expected. I am sure I would have loved it though if I were still a teenager.

Two highschool graduates, Jade and David, fall madly in love, but they have to battle social endless-love-image02differences and Jade’s rich opposing father, who after the death of his eldest son has become overprotective of his other children. Being in denial after his son’s death he is unable to see how he drives everyone away, he is on the verge of destroying his marriage and strengthens his daughter’s love for David instead of weakening it.

The kids are fresh and new like their love, and the parent’s characters are complete carrying a personal tragedy that gives a balance and reason to the story. Losing a child is a tragedy felt acutely both by the rich and the poor and it is difficult to mourn and come into terms with this loss. One has to find a way to form new friendships and move on.

On this note I would like to wish fresh, real and endless love for a Happy New Year!
