MV5BMTUyMTE0ODcxNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODE4NDQzNTE@._V1_SX640_SY720_I finally watched Mad Max Fury Road more out of curiosity than interest as I know my interests are quite different than these kinds of films.

In a futuristic society where the whole world has been destroyed, there is hardly any water and very few societies have survived. The person that keeps the water has all the power. In such a world, maxresdefaultcraziness, violence and hunger prevail, and all that can lead to
dangerous behaviour. Here we see Furiosa trying to save 5 young girls from a cruel master and Mad Max unwillingly joined them.

As I said earlier it didn’t have much to interest me. I knew that Mad Max was a series of films released in the 80s with Mel Gibson. I don’t understand the point of resurrecting them. I don’t understand all this craziness, violence, fury and nonsense that is set in the future. What difference does it make and why is it interesting? Where is the creativity and inspiration in all of this? If you want to show the futility of life, the craziness, violence, fury and nonsense you don’t need to imagine it in the future; have a look at the present.

the-maze_runner_xlgLast night I watched The Maze Runner, an action film which is the first part of a trilogy, based on the novels of James Dashner.

Every month there is a boy who is sent to the Glade, an open space in the heart of the Maze. A maze+runner+trailerhuge maze that constantly changes, hides big scary creatures that are deadly and appear during the night therefore making it impossible to leave. Until Thomas arrives and things start to change.

It is an interesting action film in a dystopic future where an elite is contacting experiments to the less fortunate. Another film that shows humans return to the basics: survival. I don’t know why but these films always remind me of the stone age. Our civilization has passed the hi-techassic age and returned to the beginning only now we have robotic dinosaurs.

It’s not a bad film to pass your time and there are two more to wait for.

αρχείο λήψηςLast night I watched Lucy and I love-love-loved it!

Lucy is a student who after absorbing, accidentally and by force, a huge amount of a new drug, she started to use more parts of her brain, and experience the world differently. Of course the drug-lord is after her while she comes in contact with a professor that has been studying the brain and its evolution for years.

It is a film that explores our existence, our evolution and our potentials. It was really interesting and it concludes on time being the dimension or concept with the highest importance; I couldn’t agree more. I too believe that we are far from conquering time and even if we were closer, we are still not ready to handle what power it might give us. It reminded me of The Fifth Element as a film and I later found out that Luc Besson made both of them; so if you liked The Fifth Element you will definitely like Lucy too.

Edge_of_Tomorrow_PosterOn Saturday night I wanted to watch something I had heard nothing about, so I watched The Edge of Tomorrow.
In a futuristic world where our planet is under alien attack and just one step before extinction, Major Cage, who earned his title without ever fighting, is transferred to a military camp. There, quite edge-of-tomorrow-tom-cruise-02-636-380unwillingly he will have to be at the war front. After landing in the battle front which is a trap and humans are slaughtered, he kills one of the Mimics, the aliens, and he also gets killed. The next moment he wakes up, back in time on the previous day that he went to the camp and … repeat and … repeat and … Until he decides to do something differently.
It is an interesting thriller and it has a very simple base story. It could easily become a boring film but it isn’t, on the contrary it is quite exciting. We might have a few questions that are not answered and some tricks that go unexplained but there is no need to look deeper. It is a good adventure film and fun to pass your time.

X-Men_Days_of_Future_Past_Official_poster_004I hadn’t watched the X-Men series for some time although I remember I had really enjoyed the first and the second films. So last night I decided to watch the last one, X-Men: Days of Future Past and I loved it too!

In this last film we see the humans having developed an amazing weapon to kill all mutants, movies-x-men-days-of-future-past-peter-dinklagethe sentinels, robotic machines that can change according to the mutant’s skill and thus be indestructible. But the sentinels have lead to the destruction of the whole civilized world, as we see mutants and humans who helped them being killed. Professor X and Magneto form a plan to stop this war before it ever begins, and for that Wolverine has to travel decades back in time. He has to find young professor and young Magneto, convince them of the future threat and stop the birth of the sentinels.

It is a fantastic adventure with an amazing cast that got me interested to watch X-Men once again. The special effects are fabulous and the story is catching, although traveling back in time always leaves me a little baffled. I loved watching the difference between the future and the 70’s aesthetics. I know that there are plans for new X-Men adventures to follow, but this film could have been the perfect ending.

Divergent-movie-poster-4I finally watched Divergent. Another film that is based on a book trilogy and is set in a fantastic and dystopian society; and although I am a great fan of The Hunger Games (one can’t help but to compare them), I also have to say that I loved this one too.

This society is divided into 5 factions and when somebody comes of age they have to choose in which faction they want to belong. Once they choose they can never go back. Our heroine zoe kravitz divergent apBeatrice decided to join the Dauntless, a faction that is like the police, but from the tests that she did she seems to be a Divergent, meaning that she doesn’t belong to only one faction. That is something that if known could kill her. So she becomes very distrustful trying to keep her secret.

It is a film set in an imaginary future of our world, a future that seems grim, but is more like a metaphor of our society as it isn’t as far away from reality as we would like to think. Using the greater good, world peace, fear of the unknown and general safety as an excuse, people can be tamed, controlled and have limited freedom. Does that sound strange, weird, foreign?

jupiter_ascending_movie_poster_2I’ve wanted to watch Jupiter Ascending since I first saw the trailer and finally last night I did. And I loved it!

It is the story of poor Jupiter Jones that is an illegal immigrant in the States and works as a cleaner along with her mother and aunt. Her life is boring and uneventful when suddenly she becomes the target of an intergalactic fight. The Abrasax family, the most powerful family in jupiter-ascending-image-eddie-redmaynethe galaxy, want to find her and kill her, and that is why they hired Cane, an alien mutant soldier. Cane though, becomes her guardian angel and helps her fight back.

It is a fantastic story of aliens; Aliens from different worlds showing higher intelligence than ours and making a statement about all the issues that I also regard as major in our lives; the insignificance of the human species and how expendable we are, the importance of time and how precious it is and of course love, because it is love. My personal favourite though and what I think is the last frontier for humans is the freedom that a pair of wings can give us. Oh, how I wish I could fly!

It is an adventure with amazing visual effects and use of the imagination that I am sure I’ ll watch again.

MockingjayPart1Poster3I just watched The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

After Katniss Everdeen destroyed the Hunger Games, she unknowingly started the revolution. People started to rebel and fight in most of the districts. Being the face of that rebellion people look up to her and expect her to lead. The opposing goverment uses her to organize the districts so that they can fight against president Snow as Hunger-Games-Mockingjay-Katnissone. Katniss reluctantly decides to help them as President Snow has captured Peeta and in his turn uses him and tortures him so that to get to Katniss and stop her.

It was amazing how many people ran into their certain death in order for a few of them to be able to bomb the Capitol. My friend commented that they should have been more organized in their attack. I think that desperate people will always end up using desperate measures. People distanced from the pain and suffering coming from tyranny probably look at the rebellion as an unorganized effort coming from unorganized revolutionaries. Truth is it is difficult to be organized when enslaved. Rebellions happen when the time is right.

Katniss is their Mockingjay, their symbol of freedom, the face of the rebellion, her song is their anthem; and I can’t wait to see the second part.

Interstellar_ALT_Artowrk“Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light…”

Last night we watched Interstellar, the new imposing film by Christopher Nolan. interstellar_poster_0

In a dystopic future, earth has turned quite hostile towards the human race and plants get sick and die. Cooper, an engineer turned farmer, after Professor Brandt’s persuading to fight for the future of the human race (the professor prompts the explorers to “rage, rage against the dying of the light”) departs on a journey to the unknown. Through space, time, black holes, and different dimensions, he tries to discover a hospitable planet to save the human race and return to his beloved daughter.

Despite its long duration the film is really impressive. The photography is undeniably amazing as it has to enhance the imaginary worlds that Mr Nolan has imagined. The music, or lack of, is exceptional as it blends the scenes and makes them even more intense. The concept of time, its relativity, has always been of interest to me and the way it is handled here is really entrancing. Finally, once more, as with all films in space, I felt so small and freaked out with any new ventures of the protagonists as well as the realisation of how powerless and out of control we really are.

Without it becoming one of my favourite films (I think Inception is that), it is a film worth watching.

prometheusSince I found out Prometheus 2 is going to be released next year I decided to watch the first film to see what it is about.

In the year 2093 a team of scientists board the spaceship Prometheus on an expedition in search of humanity’s makers, based on the theories and discoveries of two archaeologists. Prometheus-prometheus-2012-film-30865799-800-533This expedition is funded by a zillionaire who is set to find the answers to the ancient questions and live forever. After two years travelling in space they finally reach their destination, a planet where these makers are lying dead. Or not quite… Like the ancient Prometheus these people set to get answers for the world and help humankind. But I couldn’t help but feel that answers we don’t get.

The film seemed quite interesting and it had potential, but when it finished something bothered me. It is just a very bad film. There was lack of imagination and inexplicable violence. This supposedly higher species who was the creator of mankind the first thing that decides to do when the last one awakes after years of sleeping is kill four short people that he sees in front of him. The alien creature that had to appear in the last scenes had to be exactly like the Alien beings in the initial 1979 Alien film. And finally something that I noticed for the first time in a film; there was absolutely no reason for Ms Theron’s part in the film. It would have been literally exactly the same film had she not been there. I started to think that she took part only to attract viewers. Such a shame. And now they want to make a second? Why?
